FETAC Certificate in Agriculture Level 5

Introduction

Farmers of the future must have high levels of education, skills and expertise to meet the growing demands placed upon them.
The Advanced Certificate in Agriculture is designed to meet these needs.

A young farmer will require the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture - at level 6 to be eligible for Installation Aid and Stamp Duty Relief, etc.
 

 
Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture and Level 6Advanced Certificate in Agriculture.

This course is accredited by FETAC. 

Year 1 is called the Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture and consists of 24 weeks course work in Pallaskenry and 12 weeks of farm placement with a host farmer. The course begins in mid September and finishes in late May.

Year 2 is called the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture and is on Level 6 of the FETAC qualifications ladder.
(It consists of --)
a) A further 12 weeks of work placement either on a host farm OR on an off farm place of employment

b) This is followed by a 12 month placement on the Home Farm.(Please note that a student will be able to work "off farm" during the home farm placement period) Some course work in Pallaskenry must also be taken by the student during this phase.


Students will be paid the agricultural wage while on work placement with a host farmer.


 

Course Content and Duration

The Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture - follows the standard academic year - beginning in early September and continuing until the end of May.
At the end of this year the qualification awarded is the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture.

The course is designed to provide young people with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of the industry to which they relate. It includes classroom and outdoor practical instruction. Personal development of students is an important objective of the college and is achieved through courses and activities which develop social skills. The college has a range of games/ recreational facilities.

Level of Course and Age of Entry

Teagasc strongly urges prospective applicants to complete second level education. However, applicants who are otherwise suitable may be admitted with a lesser educational qualification.

Applicants for all courses must be at least 17 years of age by the 1st January 2009 for entry in 2008-2009. There is no upper age limit.

         "FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture"

Fees and Grants

The approximate fee payable to the college for the academic year 2008-2009 will be 2500Euro for residential students and 1400Euro for non-residential students.
(The fees payable are net of the N.D.P. grant)

 

  • Parents or Guardians will be liable for any medical expenses incurred by their son or daughter while attending the college.
     
  • A Doctors Medical Certificate and Anti-Tetanus Certificate will be required, after you are offered a place on the course.


Mature Students
Students aged 23 years or over do not have to do the off Farm Placement period. All of their placement can be undertaken on their own home farm. In effect this means that the time commitment for mature students mainly comprises the 24 week block of course work from September to February plus 2 weeks in May

Reasons for completing the Certificate in Agriculture

  • Are you a school leaver?
     
  • Are you likely to inherit a farm in the future either from your parents or from somebody else?
     
  • Do you want to be able to avail of Installation Aid when you take over the farm? (This is worth 15,000Euro)
     
  • Do you want to be able to avail of Stamp Duty relief when the farm is transferred to you? (This could be worth many thousands of euro)
     
  • Do your parents want to avail of the Farm Retirement scheme? (This is worth up to 15,000Euro per year)
     
  • Do you want to be able to avail of the special incentive stock relief for "trained" young farmers?

If your answer is YES to any of the above questions, you need to consider your future carefully.
 
These incentives are available only to suitably qualified and trained farmers.
 
Completing the Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture and the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture will equip you with the technical skills, financial skills and qualifications to farm in the future.
 
It will also put you in a position to to be able to avail of the incentives listed above.
 
Do your agricultural training
immediately after leaving school while you are in a position to attend a full-time course.
